SDP Planning Committee Receives An Update from the SDP Safety Network Working Group.

The Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) Network’s Planning Committee met on March 5, 2026, bringing together community leaders to address key priorities shaping the neighbourhood’s social infrastructure.

Facilitated by the network’s newly appointed Co-Chair Tamanna, the meeting opened with an update from the Safety Working Group. Co-Chair Ina Labuschagne outlined current objectives under the Regent Park Safety Network, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen safety initiatives and community well-being.

The discussion then shifted to critical gaps affecting the SDP Network’s overall momentum. Committee members emphasized the urgent need to reinforce two foundational pillars: community building and communications. The Community Building Working Group, described as central to neighbourhood engagement, continues to face challenges due to inconsistent funding and limited resources, making it difficult to sustain events that bring residents together.

At the same time, the Communications Working Group was identified as under-resourced, with members noting that without dedicated capacity, much of the network’s work remains unseen by the broader community. While the Employment and Economic Development Working Group was recognized for progress through its Workforce Integration Project, concerns were raised about a growing disconnect between that initiative and the wider SDP Network.

The committee also discussed scheduling the upcoming Stakeholders Table meeting but agreed to defer the decision due to the absence of a key working group co-chair, underscoring the importance of inclusive planning.

A proposal was brought forward to formally update the City of Toronto Social Development, Finance and Administration (SDFA) division on recent developments, including the launch of the SDP Network’s new website and a newly implemented communications policy. Members also agreed to seek financial support for upcoming initiatives.

The meeting concluded with initial discussions on revising the Planning Committee’s purpose statement, with further deliberation expected at the next session.
