The Regent Park Social Development Plan (SDP) Network’s Planning Committee met on April 9, advancing key decisions related to representation, governance, and community engagement.
A central development was the committee’s formal confirmation to join the Coalition for Responsible Community Development, following a successful vote in the previous session. With this decision now finalized, the Network is moving forward with its representation strategy to ensure a balanced and inclusive voice within the city-wide coalition.
The initial proposal outlined three representatives from Toronto Community Housing, the market-rate residential sector, and community agencies and organizations. During the meeting, members introduced and passed an amendment to include a fourth representative from subsidized and co-operative housing. The addition reflects ongoing revisions to the SDP Terms of Reference and aims to better align representation with the housing realities of Regent Park. The motion carried with consensus, reinforcing the Network’s focus on equity and inclusive participation.
To support a more thorough selection process, the committee agreed to extend the nomination timeline to the next meeting. At this stage, two nominees have been identified: Adonis Huggins, representing community agencies and organizations, and Ina Labuchagne, representing subsidized and co-operative housing residents.
The committee also approved updates to the SDP Network’s Terms of Reference, marking a step forward in refining its governance structure.
Attention then shifted to the Network’s branding and identity. Adonis Huggins, co-chair of the Communications Working Group, led a discussion on distinguishing the SDP Network from broader City-led social development initiatives. Members considered incorporating the word “Network” more prominently into the name and discussed the widespread use of the current “I Love Regent Park” image, which appears across multiple community groups. There was general agreement that both the logo and its central visual elements require redesign to establish a more distinct and recognizable identity. The discussion will continue at a future meeting.
The committee also addressed the Toronto Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy. Facilitator Deany Peters provided context on the need for clarity regarding Regent Park’s current standing within the initiative. In response, a formal inquiry letter was co-drafted with Adonis Huggins, with input from Gail Lynch and Network administrator Brandy Skinner. The committee reached consensus that Co-Chair Tamanna Yeasmin will submit the letter on behalf of the Network.
In announcements, members noted that the Employment and Economic Development Working Group has released its Workforce Integration Project report, covering December 2024 to March 2026. The report is now publicly available on the Network’s website. Additionally, recent crime statistics shared by Toronto Police Service during a Safety Network meeting have been uploaded for community access.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on launching a monthly SDP Network newsletter. The proposed initiative is intended to strengthen communication with residents by providing consistent updates on projects and improving transparency across the Network’s work. Further planning on the newsletter is expected in upcoming meetings.
